Professor Firmino is the Medical director of Psychiatry and the Director of the Gerontopsychiatry at Coimbra University Hospitals.
After 1992 Prof Firmino had organized Gerontopsychiatry Consultation at Coimbra University Hospitals and then went on to organize different courses, congressed and workshops in a variety of areas. Between 2003 and 2006 Prof Firmino was the President of Portuguese Psychogeriatric Association.
In 2007, Prof Firmino was elected to the Board of the International Psychogeriatric Association and was also invited to join the advisory board of the European project EDCON (Alzheimer disease). This was also the year that he became Vice-Chair of the Meetings Commitee of the International Psychogeriatric Association.
Prof Firmino current research interests include:
- Exploring delirium post-surgery in older populations
- The study and validation of different instruments e.g. MoCA test, Demtect, Geriatric Depressive Scale, Clock Drawn Test, CAM-Confusion Assessment Method
- Epilepsy: pharmological and psychoterapeutic interventions
