Nancy Pachana discusses Returning from Retirement on Drive with Emma Griffiths ABC 612 Radio

University of Queensland School of Psychology researcher Professor Nancy Pachana visited the group of 14 inhabited Torres Strait Islands in March, along with representatives from James Cook University and Alzheimer’s Australia (Qld) as part of a research project.

Mental health issues are prominent and under-addressed in aged care and there needs to be more mental health nurses, psychologists and psychiatrists who know about treating older people, Professor Nancy Pachana tells AAA.

The latest edition of The Oxford Textbook of Old Age Psychiatry, second edition has recently been released.

A symposium presented entitles Anxiety disorders in late life: From etiology and detection to impacts on health. The symposium presented issues in late-life anxiety and was well attended even though scheduled for the last session of the conference!

With Australia’s ageing population, diseases like dementia are on the rise. Researchers from The University of Queensland are at the forefront of research dealing with a range of dementia-related issues thanks to recent funding from the National Health and Medical Research Centre.

Dr Pachana recently attended the International Psychogeriatric Association conference in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from 4th – 7th May 2009. The conference was themed Brain Aging and Quality of Life.
