Afternoons with Katherine Feeney explores "The health benefits of owning a pet"

If you live on your own or you're socially isolated, the advantages of owning a pet are obvious: they're great company.

But a new study in the US also seems to show clear links between better health and slower cognitive decline in older people if they have a dog or a cat in their lives.

Professor Nancy Pachana is a clinical geropsychologist and neuropsychologist, she's the Director of the University of Queensland's Healthy Ageing Initiative and her book is called Ageing: A Very Short Introduction.

Nancy is chatting with ABC Radio Brisbane's Kat Feeney about how owning a pet could change our lives for the better.
