Prof Edward Helmes
James Cook University

I am currently teaching courses related to normal ageing and disorders common in older people at James Cook University. My work with older people began with working on a scale to assess psychosocial functioning in older people in residential care facilities, and moved on into clinical neuropsychological assessment work of older people in the community. Then I was offered the opportunity to teach psychology students about work with older people, leading to developing suitable programs. My research collaborations with other AMI members relate in part to this interest in teaching, but also in topics relating to the assessment of cognitive and personality functions in older adults, and research on stereotyped attitudes and discrimination toward older adults.
